What advice would you give PR grads?
Communicators suggest newbies should share a cup of coffee, find a mentor, or volunteer as they begin their career.
Follow your dreams. Anything is possible. You are the future.
Blah, blah, blah.
Don’t you wish somebody would’ve told you what you were getting yourself into when you were handed your degree?
Well, now you can help the class of 2011. We asked communicators to share their best advice for recent grads, and they didn’t disappoint. What would you add to the list?
Say hello
“Introduce yourself to as many people as possible,” says Leslie K. Friedman, director of public relations at the Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa. “Have an elevator speech about yourself that makes you stand out.”
Question authority
“Don’t assume your boss and other C-level executives know everything,” says Wyatt Jefferies of Silverpop Corporate Communications. “If you haven’t heard the information presented, present it. Make suggestions. Ask questions.”
Showcase your portfolio
“Have a portfolio of your work (school projects, internships, volunteer experience) to share during an interview,” says Virginia V. Mann, who serves on the Board of Directors of PRSA Chicago. “Highlight ways you solved problems and found solutions.”
