Uber promises clear background checks after alleged rape
The ride-sharing company was back in the news after a driver allegedly raped a passenger in New Delhi. The city reportedly has barred the service from operating further.
Days after Uber CEO Travis Kalanick promised to make his company “smarter and more humble” in the wake of repeated PR snafus, the ride-sharing service is facing what may be its biggest crisis yet.
The city of New Delhi reportedly barred Uber from offering any further rides Monday morning after news of an alleged rape of a passenger by a driver made headlines. According to Mashable:
Police say they expect the court to formally charge Shiv Kumar Yadav with raping the finance company employee. He was hired to ferry her home from a dinner engagement on Friday night.
Kalanick issued a statement Sunday in which he didn’t attempt to deny that the assault took place, calling it a “despicable crime”:
What happened over the weekend in New Delhi is horrific. Our entire team’s hearts go out to the victim of this despicable crime. We will do everything, I repeat, everything to help bring this perpetrator to justice and to support the victim and her family in her recovery.
