TV’s Barbara Walters tweets news of her retirement
The veteran journalist scooped her own announcement on ‘The View’ by posting on Twitter. As she heads toward her final broadcast in 2014, we offer 10 of her most salient quotes.
Yet it was on Twitter that the veteran broadcaster spread the word that she would be retiring in 2014:
Big news – and I want to tell you first: abcn.ws/19gEaKv. (Looking forward to one more great year!)
— Barbara Walters (@BarbaraJWalters) May 13, 2013
That link takes you to ABC News, yes, but the tweet—issued just minutes after the story was posted Sunday night—was what got the message out in a big way. The “Big news” post had been retweeted more than 525 times by Monday morning, when Walters was due to make her formal announcement on ABC’s “The View,” which she co-hosts.
The network says the 83-year-old journalist “will continue to anchor and report for ABC News, appear on ‘The View,’ and anchor specials throughout the year.”
