Toronto plays host to a provocative PR initiative

The Nancy Sinatra mantra took on a meaning all its own this weekend in Toronto, where hundreds of self-proclaimed “sluts” took to the downtown area as part of an organized march against the stereotype of sexual-assault victims.

According to the Toronto Star, the march—coined by organizers as the “SlutWalk”—was in protest of a Toronto police officer who had suggested that women could avoid sexual assault by not dressing so scantily.

The comments had been made during a safety forum at York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in late January where Constable Michael Sanguinetti is said to have told the room that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”
