Speaking of charity, most people in the U.S. recognize “God Bless America,” but we’re guessing few are aware that the song’s writer Irving Berlin—so moved by patriotism while penning it—opted not to collect a dime from the tune. Instead, he set it up so that every penny or royalty ever earned off of the melody went to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in impoverished and disadvantaged areas. Fast-forward 73 years and that’s more than $10 million donated.
Oprah is no stranger to doing good works with her wealth. Just be careful when trying to snap pictures of her doing it. Photojournalist Lionel Lafortune learned that the hard way after he was detained for photographing the Big O while she toured an encampment for Haitians displaced by the 2010 earthquake.
