Radio Shack changes Thanksgiving Day hours after employee backlash
The struggling electronics retail chain reversed its decision to stay open all day during the holiday, and will instead give workers a midday break.
As Thanksgiving approaches, consumers are treated to the annual game of “will they or won’t they” in regards to store openings on Thanksgiving Day.
Radio Shack, which has somehow survived one of the five worst rebranding efforts of all time, had a change of heart about whether it will stay open all day on Thanksgiving.
After a backlash from employees, the company announced Wednesday that instead of staying open from 8 a.m. until midnight (because who doesn’t want to buy replacement wires on 11:45 p.m. on Thanksgiving?) it will take a midday break, and close from noon to 5 p.m.
Retailers that do decide to open during the holiday are treated to a barrage of well-deserved negative press, and face accusations of unraveling the country’s moral fiber.
Why all the controversy over who will stay open and who will close? Well, we can put 49 percent of the blame on our mindless consumer brethren. A National Retail Federation survey found that 32 percent of shoppers said they would hit the aisles on Thanksgiving Thursday.
