Is the shaming of Vancouver rioters on social media a tad Orwellian?
Using blogs and Facebook to shame people who took part in the riots in Vancouver last week is a form of mob mentality, said one university professor. What do you think?
Important people are on the warpath. Notably, British Columbia Premier Christy Clark has said that no one will be able to “hide behind their bandana or their hoodie.”
But is it ethical to use and encourage social media as a tool for public shaming. As Alexander Samuel of Emily Carr University says, “The intentions behind what has happened in the past week in Vancouver are good … the use of blogs and Facebook pages (for these purposes) is a form of mob mentality of its own.”
