Writing is darn near impossible to master, but there are methods to ease our editorial madness.

When you get an idea, write it down. Scribble it down on paper, type it into your phone, scratch it onto papyrus, or carve it into stone, if you must. If you fail to write an idea down, it will be gone forever. As Ludwig van Beethoven reportedly said: “If I don’t write it down immediately, I forget it right away. If I put it into a sketchbook, I never forget it, and I never have to look it up again.”
Whenever you’re working on a moonlight sonata—or perhaps a midnight empanada—actively capture ideas whenever they emerge.
Don’t edit while you write. This is painful for perfectionists, but it’s better to save the copy cleanup for later. Just type, baby. Let those words flow.
