How Nationwide Children’s Hospital is addressing racism and advocating for health equity

By prioritizing listening, storytelling and backing up words with actions, the organization is working to create positive change and promote health equity.

For Nationwide Children’s Hospital, an integral part of its mission to keep all children healthy is standing against systemic racism.

As one hospital executive poignantly put it during a recent virtual meeting for senior managers: “This crap hurts kids.”

That meeting took place a day after almost 2,000 employees came together outside many of the hospital’s Columbus, Ohio-area facilities, holding signs and kneeling to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and in support of health equity for children. The hospital-organized effort was in response to employees’ desire to demonstrate the organization’s ongoing commitment to this crucial social issue.

Today our staff and their families gathered at Nationwide Children's locations for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in memory of George Floyd's tragic death and to support his daughter and the health equity of all black children impacted by racism. pic.twitter.com/DiqXH3YRGM
