Greenpeace outmaneuvering Mattel on deforestation charges
A social media war has ensued, with Ken ‘breaking up’ with Barbie over the packaging materials the toymaker allegedly uses. Is Mattel’s response even registering?
Environmental crusaders Greenpeace went the viral video route in getting its message out about gigantic toymaker Mattel, which, according to a spoof video, is “packaging toys with destroyed rainforest.” In the video, Ken decides to break up with Barbie because she’s devastating the rainforest:
Greenpeace isn’t stopping there. The organization also created a Facebook page urging its 856,000 fans to change their profile pictures to a shot of Ken making an angry face.
Take that, Mattel!
That’s about all Mattel has done so far—take it.
As the Los Angeles Times points out:
On Twitter, as Greenpeace protesters were unfurling a giant banner from the roof of Mattel headquarters, the company tweeted from @BarbieStyle (53,400 followers): “After a 7-year break, I really need to update summer pictures of me and Ken! Collecting seashells on the beach to decorate a picture frame.” Since then: radio silence on a feed that normally features ten or more tweets a day.
