Best Social Intranet

Dollar Financial’s redesigned intranet changes the landscape

After an employee survey showed that employees felt a bit disconnected from one another, the company overhauled its intranet, DORIS. It worked wonders.

Dollar Financial’s 2012 employee census found that the company’s 2,000 or so employees felt like they were being bombarded by emails, yet they didn’t feel like they were hearing from their colleagues all that much. Likewise, the company’s executives wanted to know more about what employees thought so they could make decisions on their behalf.

Enter DORIS, the Dollar Online Retail Information System. The U.K. finance firm already had an intranet in place, but interviewed employees to figure out ways to make it more social. From those interviews, developers reshaped DORIS into a system that included forums for all employees, blogs by managers and executives, an easy-to-use home page with one-click access to the items employees use most, a section where stores can share ideas with one another, and training videos based on questions and discussions posted in the forums.

Dollar Financial’s staff has really taken advantage of the new resources. There has been a massive increase in employees getting involved in training programs, and communication is better than ever. For that reason, Dollar Financial’s DORIS is the winner of Ragan’s 2013 Employee Communications Award for Best Social Intranet.

Training course enrollment at Dollar has doubled, and many regional managers are blogging every day. DORIS has become an integral part of the company’s day-to-day operations, and employees feel a degree of ownership of the system. It works.
