Academy president: No diversity problem for Oscars

Many reacted to the 2015 Oscar nominations with anger at a dearth of nominees of color. The Academy has pushed back.

Filmmakers, actors, film critics and fans reacted with anger after The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year’s acting nominees—and all 20 are white.

Additional Oscar categories weren’t showing much diversity, either.

“Selma,” a biopic about Martin Luther King Jr., was nominated for best picture and best original song, but the film’s director, Ana DuVernay, didn’t get an Oscar nomination, nor did any of the film’s actors. DuVernay made history in December as the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe for best director.

Selma is magic. It’s apparently one of the best pictures of the year but not the best written, directed or acted. It sprung fully formed.
