Facebook group persuades Mattel to make bald Barbie doll
The company plans to distribute them at children’s hospitals and other healthcare facilities. It’s a win for a social media movement that began in December.
“Mattel company spokesman Alan Hilowitz told HealthPop that the company will produce a friend of Barbie that will have wigs, hats, scarves and other accessories to give children “a traditional fashion play experience.” The kids will have the option to remove the wigs and head coverings.”
The move by Mattel is a result of a Facebook page launched in late December by Rebecca Sypin and Jane Bingham, two friends affected by cancer. Bingham lost her hair after treatments, as did Sypin’s 12-year-old daughter.
