Ottawa police offer shooting updates via Twitter
The social media platform has become something of an information clearinghouse after a member of the Canadian Forces was killed in that nation’s capital.
A Wednesday morning shooting at Ottawa’s National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill led to the death of a Canadian Forces member and one shooter.
As is often the case when violence strikes in a major metropolitan area, some confusion took hold in the hours after the shooting. For example, initial reports stated that shots were also fired at Rideau Centre. They weren’t. The Ottawa police tweeted to clear things up:
UPDATE: This morning’s shooting incidents occurred at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill. Not Rideau Centre. #ottnews

The police department has been tweeting regularly about the shooting since around 11 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, confirming the death of the soldier:
One shooting victim succumbed to injuries. He was a member of the Canadian Forces. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones.
