FIFA: Sorry for map placing Crimea in Russia
A video unveiling the 2018 World Cup logo included a map that put the disputed peninsula within Russia’s borders. The soccer organization blamed a Russian video production agency.
During this year’s World Cup, Delta Airlines had to apologize for a photo that implied giraffes are native to Ghana, even though they aren’t. That was mostly just embarrassing.
The latest soccer-related geography miscue could be a full-on international incident, however.
FIFA, the governing body that runs the World Cup, had to apologize Thursday after a video unveiling the logo for the 2018 World Cup in Russia included Crimea within the host country’s borders. The video was projected Tuesday on the side of the historic Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
FIFA issued this statement, in which it placed the blame on Russian video producers:
