7 summer story ideas reporters will love
It’s nearly the time of year for sweltering heat, vacations and reporters looking for news to fill holes on very quiet days. Here’s how you can get their attention.
As everyone scurries off to the pool to get some quality R&R, now might be the best time to pitch a story to reporters for a little quality PR.
School is out, vacations are scheduled, and some folks will use up their remaining sick days for a break, which means there will be less competition when it comes time to submit your story.
The rule of thumb for submissions to newspapers is to send your pitch pretty close to the publication date (between one and three weeks out.) If you’re hoping to submit to television or to a magazine, you will need to submit much earlier (one to three months out for television and between three to six months for a magazine.)
The next question is, what are you going to write about? If you don’t have a specific topic in mind, here are seven ideas to get those creative juices flowing:
1. Holidays and events There are so many different special summer events—including Independence Day, Father’s Day, concerts, conventions, and more—to choose. If your client’s brand can be associated with any of them, journalists will be sure to give the story preference over other, more generic “look at me” stories.
