GE makes its technology shine through its blog

GE Reports takes a journalistic approach to articles about the company’s research and technological innovations, as well as other news.

The standard fare for the average corporate blog usually consists of some companywide announcements, a profile of an executive or two, possibly some photos of a new project or a well-groomed campus. Rarely are they hubs for big-picture looks at the technological landscape or places where events are put in historical perspective.

That’s what makes GE Reports, General Electric’s daily blog, so appealing. Not only can you find articles and slideshows about why GE’s ownership of NBC ending was a milestone, you can also find the true story of the first-ever MRI scan, and explanations of why ceramics are good material for jet engines. For the depth of its content, as well as its creative use of video, infographics, and slideshows, GE Reports is the winner of the Best Blog category of the 2013 PR Daily Awards.

The blog has garnered considerable attention, from publications including Wired, Fast Company, The New York Times, and Scientific American, as well as the blogs Gizmodo, Techcrunch, Mashable, and The Verge.

Last year, the blog drew 1.5 million page views and 600,000 unique visits. The average visitor remained on the site for about a minute and a half, well above the typical amount of time Americans spend on websites.

With so much interesting stuff to read, it’s no wonder.
