PSEG Outlook tackles Hurricane Sandy with comprehensive coverage

Employees of New Jersey’s largest utility toiled furiously as the huge storm slammed the state. The internal publication’s staff sprang into action, too, profiling their colleagues’ dedication and hard work.

Throughout 2012, PSEG Outlook, the internal publication of New Jersey’s largest utility, delivered well-packaged information to its employees.

Until December.

That’s when its special edition on Superstorm Sandy was published.

The Outlook staff rose to the occasion, just as the gas and electric company’s employees had in preparing for and responding to the late-October hurricane that walloped the Garden State.

The special issue, along with the fine work its staff performed during the year, garnered PSEG Outlook top honors in Ragan’s 2012 Employee Communications Awards for Best Design (Print Publication).

The issue featured (among other terrific elements) extraordinary photography; dozens of factoids about the storm, its effects, and the company’s response; and a superb salute to the staff from Chairman/CEO Ralph Izzo. Along the bottom of every page were scores of tweets from grateful customers.

The editorial team removed their names from Page 2, where the masthead is normally anchored, and in its place offered copious thanks and congratulations to all those companywide who had contributed to the special issue. (Those editors could run, but they couldn’t hide; we found them in other issues.) Kudos to Melissa Ficuciello, editor; Erica Lembo, assistant editor; Kathy Spina, creative direction; Arlene Farenci and John Masi, design and layout; and all their contributors.

Congratulations for a solid year capped by an extraordinary special issue. Here’s hoping Mother Nature settles down and you never have to do an encore.
