The annual tradition of making New Year’s resolutions has its critics. For many, the optimism of a new workout routine, healthier eating or other self-care habits can be quickly abandoned by February.

Yet, the start of a new year is an important time to take stock and assess. Is your career working for you as hard as you are working for it?

For communicators, it might be time to set some personal goals around achievement and learning or setting boundaries in the workplace—or simply trying to put into words what you would like to see happen in 2022.

Here are some New Year’s resolutions to build your skills and create the work you want in the year ahead:

1. Make cybersecurity a top priority this year.

After all the digital transformation of the pandemic era, more of your work—and that of your organization—is online than ever before. That means you have some startling vulnerabilities.

Beyond personal online hygiene and good data practices, communicators should resolve to revisit crisis plans for cyber attacks in 2022 and set goals regarding how to make their organizations safer. Think about how misinformation and other online threats could affect your reputation in the year ahead, and create plans for addressing the multiplying threats of an increasingly digital marketplace.
